Increase in the number of foreign tourists in hotels

Hotel stays by foreigners rose by 68% in Japan, reaching a record high in March.

Overnight stays by foreigners in Japanese hotels rose by 68.2% year-on-year to around 12.7 million.

This was the highest monthly figure ever, due in part to the weak yen.

According to the Japan Tourism Association, this latest figure exceeded the previous record of around 12.3 million set in December 2023.

Overnight stays by all travelers (including foreign travelers) were also up 8.2% year-on-year, reaching around 55 million in the reference month.

Tourism in Japan has been on the rebound since the government lifted border controls imposed in the wake of the pandemic, but also thanks to the low level of the yen.
