Hotel prices in Japan to rise by 25% between 2022 and 2023

The end of health restrictions and the upturn in tourism have had an impact on accommodation prices.

The price of hotel rooms in Japan in 2023 rose by more than 25% compared with 2022, according to the latest Consumer Price Index report published by the Ministry of Internal Affairs and Communications. This increase is attributed to the lifting of health restrictions and the low yen rates that have led to a strong recovery in tourism since 2023.

According to Takuto Yasuda, researcher at the Nissay Research Institute: “With the end of the Corona and the significant upturn in demand, there is a shortage of staff. Wages have had to be increased in order to acquire labor, and prices are being passed on to hotel bills. There is also a tendency to pass on increased costs due to higher prices to hotel bills.”

The end of the pandemic, the significant upturn in demand and the shortage of manpower in Japan are also having an impact on hotels, which are having to spend money on renovations.

Japan-wide, the impact is also being felt on “business travel.” Many companies are having to increase their flat-rate accommodation costs for employee travel.
