Remote work on the decline in Japan

The results of a survey conducted by the Ministry of Land, Infrastructure, Transport and Tourism were published on March 31.

Remote work practices, made widespread by the Covid-19 pandemic, are on the decline in Japan. These are the findings of an online survey conducted by the Ministry of Land, Infrastructure, Transport and Tourism between November and December 2023 on a sample of 40,000 people.

In the course of 2023, 26.1% of respondents indicated that they teleworked, a decrease of 0.9 percentage points compared to 2022. This proportion varies by region. For example, almost 40% of respondents working in Tokyo telework, compared with 17.5% in the regions.

However, it seems that work patterns combining telecommuting and presence in the workplace are on the increase.

The frequency of employed teleworkers intending to continue working is high. The main reasons are “efficient use of time” (around 40% of respondents) and “reduced commuting time” (around 33% of respondents).
