Join us for a special event hosted by the French Chamber of Commerce in collaboration with HEC Paris! On January 20, 2025, from 12pm to 2pm, HEC Professor Alberto Alemanno will deliver an insightful presentation titled "What's Next for Europe," discussing the challenges faced by the EU.

Don’t miss this unique opportunity to gain valuable perspectives from a leading expert.

Introduction:

The EU, like the United States, has a new administration—the von der Leyen II Commission—tasked with steering the continent until the next European elections in 2029.

This administration, which has notably shifted to the right, faces significant challenges. These include the worsening triple planetary crisis of pollution, biodiversity loss, and climate change, as well as threats to its territorial integrity from Russia and trade wars with both China and the US following Trump's return to the White House.

High on the agenda will be transforming European industry to ensure security (moving towards an EU-wide defense), sustainable prosperity, and competitiveness, ideally contributing to a just transition.

There are numerous ideas for funding these substantial needs, from replicating the post-Covid recovery fund (Next Generation EU) to establishing EU-wide taxes on plastic bags, tech companies, and fossil fuel industries.

In the next EU budget, both the quantity and quality of funds will need to be substantial if the EU is serious about a just energy transition and maintaining its place in the world. Former European Central Bank chair Mario Draghi has prepared a report providing a blueprint on how to achieve this.

This presentation will offer a comprehensive overview of the challenges facing the EU and the solutions currently being considered.
