If the Japanese coasts are known to shelter a significant biodiversity, they are also known for their high concentration of microplastics. These particles of a size between 0.3 and 5 millimeters, forming a pollution almost invisible to the eye, complex and difficult to treat.
To prevent plastic pollution, it must be fought at its source. In April 2022, the Japanese Ministry of the Environment implemented the Act on Promotion of Resource Circulation for Plastics. Aimed at strengthening resource circulation at every stage of the life cycle of plastic products from design to waste disposal, this Act is a strong incentive for businesses to transition to circular business models.
As such, Japan's plastic recycling revolution is on its way, with a number of initiatives taking shape and mobilising a solid ecosystem of concerned stakeholders - scientists, businesses, municipalities and consumers - coming together to move away from the take-make-dispose model.
This event will welcome Romain TROUBLÉ, Executive Director of the TARA Ocean Foundation, who will present TARA's research on microplastics in Japan and will talk about the importance of raising public awareness through science.
We will take a look at how product manufacturers are adopting circular practices with Tatsuki KADO, Senior General Manager at Suntory Holdings Limited, who will introduce Suntory's key initiatives.
A plastic recycling case study will be presented by Yoshiyuki OTA, Director and Executive GM of Sales at PLANIC Co., Ltd., Japan's largest recycled plastic manufacturing company recycling used plastics, established by Veolia Japan, Toyota Tsusho Corporation and Kojima Sangyo Co., Ltd.
